Another Wylam beer – I’ve previously sampled “Jakehead IPA” and that was truly great. As such, it was hardly difficult to pick up another of their brews when I found one available at Grunting Growler. From a brief look online, Wylam seem to be producing some exciting brews at the moment; ultimately, they are a microbrewery based in the North East of England and are producing some of the biggest craft beers at this time.
Mandatory “Us & Them” Beer Facts
- Untappd Rating: 4.09 (at time of writing)
- ABV: 8.2%
- Style: DIPA
- Serving: Can 440ml
The can has a simple black and red design: no fuss, no ridiculous eye-popping logos, or whacky font that turns your head. It was chilled, having come straight out of the fridge, and a pale liquid fell just short of the rim of the pint glass when poured. The head of the beer was quite tall, initially, for a DIPA. This then lost about half of its volume and left white lacing on the glass.
Before even tasting it, I could smell tropical fruit coming from the beer, making it appear really “juicy”. Being made from Citra and Mosaic hops, this was hardly a surprise! I began to salivate and couldn’t wait any longer to sample. On tasting, the citrus notes really came through, matching the scent profile. The beer was super smooth, which is typical when oats used in the production process. There was very little bitterness to this beer, making it a light, easy-drinking IPA. There was a subtle reminder of alcohol due to warmth at the end, but it was nothing overwhelming and I feel as though the 8.2% ABV was masked.
Rating: 4.0/5. “Us & Them” is light, easy-drinking and tastes closer to a session than a double IPA… Don’t drink too many of these beers in a row – they will quickly catch up with you, though with a flavour like this, you will be sorely tempted!
Luckily, for me, my beer buying has got out of control. Lucky you might ask? Well, this is because I accidentally purchased a second can at another local craft beer store, Wee Beer Shop (apparently I can no longer keep track of what I have bought). Oh well, I’ll have to enjoy it again. Woop woop!
