Patrons Project 2.05

Northern Monk are known for producing some fantastic beers. For this edition of “Patrons Project”, Northern Monk have paired up with Seven Island Brewery, based in Greece. The final product aimed to feature abundant tropical notes and milkshake characteristics too. A critical reason behind why this beer was created is due to the fact that Greek brewing laws actual prohibit a beer of this nature being formed in this Mediterranean country!

The artwork on this can is sensational: a glorious eagle, with a vibrant neon pink background, framing the bird’s beak at the centre point. This artwork was created by the Manchester-based street art duo known as ‘Nomad Clan’. Check out their twitter for more of their designs @Nomad_clan

Mandatory “Patron’s Project 2.05” Facts

  • Untappd Rating: 3.95  (At time of writing)
  • ABV: 7.4%
  • IBU: 30
  • Style: Milkshake IPA
  • Serving: Can, 440ml

The artwork on the can was absolutely stunning, standing out bold and proud, making it far too tempting. The can poured perfectly, just filling the glass, though the thick, foamy, bubbly, pearly head settled quickly, leaving just a few mm afloat on the beer. The smell was totally characteristic of a milkshake IPA: it has that elusive sweetness (produced from the lactose used in the brewing process) and was backed with vanilla. In addition to this, there was a nice mango resonance on the nose too. Whilst admiring the beer I peeled back the label, which revealed more information regarding the collaboration project – I absolutely love this characteristic design feature of Northern Monks cans.

I’ve consumed a few mediocre beers recently, so due to my faith in Northern Monk, my hopes had really built prior to drinking this. The beer was incredibly juicy from the very first sip, with a crazy tropical, juicy mouthful that I instantly adored. The primary flavour was mango, achieved by adding the fruit to enhance the tropical hops used. In addition to this, there was a comforting, but not overwhelming, warmth from the moderate-high ABV of 7.4%. As this faded, it left a sweet vanilla flavour, which was further lifted by a light, almost sour, tropical note at the end. Beautiful.

Rating: 4.0/5. “Patron’s Project 2.05” is a very well-rounded beer; juicy, strong and sweet. If only this beer was still in production, I’d snap up a dozen at least!
