BrewDog

Q: Why the name BrewDog?

A: We started out homebrewing back in 2006, in a garage owned by Martin’s mum. When we finally managed to get our brewery off the ground the year after one of the ever-present features was Bracken the chocolate Lab. The original brewdog, he inspired us to reach for the stars every day, so BrewDog was the only name we could pick.

Q: How long have you/the brewery been making beer for?

A: We brewed our first batch in April of 2007 in a small unit in Fraserburgh (with Bracken in attendance of course). The first beer was Punk IPA, the initial creation of which was the inspiration for our homebrew adventures. Back then in Fraserburgh we had 80HL of tank space and our bottle filler could kick out 180 bottles an hour. Things are very different, eleven years on.

Q: What got you into brewing?

A:

[Martyn, Senior Brewer] For me it was a bit of an accident, someone I knew worked at a brewery and I applied for a packaging role. After a few years, a job came up within the brewing department. For me, this changed my whole perspective as I learned about the complex process that most people are unaware of. The more I learned, the more new beers and flavours I wanted to try

Q: When you’re not brewing what are your hobbies?

A: I spend a lot of time with my family, drink new beers with friends. I also enjoy live music (although not many bands I like visit Aberdeen)

Q: What’s your favourite style of beer?

A: Without question, it’s imperial stout. The dark rich flavours and higher warming ABV make it a perfect winter beer (although I would personally drink one at any time, especially with a nice chocolate dessert)

Q: If you could only have one of your brews for the rest of your life, what would it be and why? (I know it’s like picking a favourite child!)

A: Jackhammer, it’s a versatile beer for me. More flavour than a standard IPA but not so strong you would only have one. Tastes great all year round

Q: You are in a supermarket, in the Beer aisle of course, what would you buy? (your wonderful beer isn’t on sale unfortunately!)

A: Even though the supermarket selections are getting bigger, the choice of beer styles is still quite limited. I don’t often buy from the supermarket but the last beer I picked up from there was Thornbridge Jaipur.

Q: What new flavour combination would you love to try/what new hops would you like to work with?

A: HBC 472 hops sound like something I would go for. Bourbon and coconut without the barrels is interesting.

*I definitely approve – I just sampled the HBC 472 Dry Hop Stout by Overtone which was beautiful!*

Q: What breweries do you have upcoming collaborations with and who’s on the brewing collab wish list?

A: We are currently brewing with Schneider Weisse as I type, in terms of future I would like to collab with Wild beer. Billionaire is one of my favourite beers (unavailable for a while sadly)

Q: Equity for Punks V has now closed, what are the main objectives with the financial injection for over the next two years?

A: The reaction to Equity for Punks V was amazing. We closed the doors on it on the 15th of October with a final tally of £26.2 million, smashing the world record for the most successful equity crowdfunding raise. Every penny of this will be re-invested back into the business to grow it for our army of 94,000 Equity Punk shareholders.

Funds raised in Equity for Punks V will support expansion of both our HQ brewery in Ellon and our US brewery in Columbus, Ohio, as well as accelerating the construction of our new brewery in Brisbane, Australia, and also kicking off BrewDog China. All of these projects have the same aim – to get fresh beer into the hands of craft beer lovers, wherever they are.

Q: You made a hotel?! Oh wait, two! Details please!

A: Well, we are going to make two – the one at our Ellon HQ is still in the pipeline. But yes, we opened The DogHouse Columbus at our US brewery in August this year. The world’s first hotel inside a craft brewery, it has 32 rooms each themed around beer, and each with BrewDog beer on tap, a minibar curated by James and Martin and a fridge for shower beer! The interest was incredible and people seem to love it. Check out more info (and check-in) here > https://www.brewdog.com/doghouse.
