Hop City is back this year: a three-day festival taking place at the Northern Monk Refectory in Leeds, which brings together an impressive collection of breweries. For those of us not lucky enough to attend, we can at least enjoy the festival’s promotional beer. This time around, for its third year, Northern Monk invited a quartet of UK’s best breweries to collaborate with them on a festival-edition DDH (Double Dry Hop) IPA. Check out some of the breweries that are going to be present at this year’s Hop City, starting 19/4/19!

A central golden hop upon a black can prominently advertised Hop City! There were subtle differences in the can’s appearance, but broadly it looked similar to last years. Given that DEYA were a collaborating brewery, I had to use my Tiny Rebel’s 7th birthday glass, as it featured this brewery too. It poured a mid-orange colour; incredibly hazy in appearance, with a tall and bubbly off-white foam head. Aromas from the beer included grapefruit and passionfruit. The beer was medium-bodied with a light carbonation. It started off with a gentle mix of citrus; primarily lime and grapefruit, with some tropical passionfruit too. There was a dry bitterness near the end, following a brief appearance by a light biscuit-malt base. To complete, there was a delicate note of coconut. Though in many beers 7% ABV or higher the alcohol warmth comes through, the booziness here was not as pronounced as I had expected, which was nice change!
Diagnosis: 3.0/5. Given the heavyweight breweries involved I expected this beer to have a greater intensity. I had to search far and wide for this beer, as it was out of stock in many locations, so because of this I was actually a little disappointed – personally, I much preferred last years!
As always, take Untappd scores with a pinch of salt, though do so even more with this kind of beer. Many users have checked into an older versions of Hop City, rather than the 2019 version!
